Documents, photos, email and settings: plan your migration so important information is not left behind on the old computer.

Make an inventory

Start with Documents, Desktop, Pictures and Downloads. Consider other drives, accounting databases and older projects. An email application may contain a local archive that is not stored on the mail server. Agree which folders need migration and which should remain untouched. Remember browser bookmarks and templates used by specialised applications rather than assuming everything lives in Documents.

Files are not installed applications

Copying an application folder does not guarantee the program will run on the new computer. An installer, account or valid licence is often needed. Check export options for specialised applications separately. Do not send passwords in ordinary email; sign in yourself when necessary and use the developer’s migration method. Discuss compatibility in advance if you are changing operating systems.

Cloud storage and a separate copy

Verify that cloud files have synced and open on the new device; seeing folder names is not enough. Create an additional copy of essential files on separate storage before migration. Synchronisation can propagate deletions, so it should not be your only backup. Keep the copy separate and confirm that required files can actually be opened from it.

Verify before erasing the old drive

Open several document types, recent photos and required archives. Check everyday applications and email. Do not erase the old drive until you have verified the result and retained a backup. MB Kmvle agrees migration scope and price according to drive condition and the work required. If the old computer will not start, we first assess its storage.
