Compare the same workload
Short runtime does not automatically mean a faulty battery. Video calls, games, a bright display and connected devices draw more power than reading documents. Close unnecessary applications, lower brightness and compare runtime while performing the same task. Note the charge drop and elapsed time. Manufacturer runtime figures reflect particular test conditions and may differ substantially from everyday use.
Review applications and power settings
Check battery usage information to identify demanding applications. Indexing and synchronisation may temporarily increase consumption after an update. Allow these tasks to finish with a compatible charger connected. Persistent load while idle calls for a review of startup applications and a security scan. Energy saving settings can reduce consumption, but cannot restore a worn battery’s physical capacity.
Capacity and unexpected shutdowns
Compare design capacity with full charge capacity if the system reports both. Treat the figures as an indicator alongside battery age, actual runtime and shutdowns with charge remaining. A sudden percentage drop can suggest wear, but charging and power circuit faults must also be considered. Repeatedly draining the battery to zero is not a necessary troubleshooting step.
When to stop using the laptop
Switch off and stop charging if the battery is swollen, the touchpad has risen, the case has deformed or there is unusual heat or odour. Do not press the casing flat or puncture the battery. This is not a power settings issue. Contact a service centre to arrange safe handling and identify the correct replacement for the model.
Information that helps diagnosis
Provide the exact laptop model, approximate battery age, typical runtime and whether the change was sudden. Bring the charger you normally use. Testing can distinguish battery wear from high system consumption or charging trouble. Replacement compatibility and total cost should be agreed before work begins. A new battery will not correct excessive consumption caused by a constantly busy system.
