Identify the Mac type first
Intel and Apple silicon Macs enter Recovery differently. On Apple silicon, hold the power button until startup options appear; on Intel, use Command-R during startup. Check the linked Apple instructions for the exact sequence.
Entering Recovery does not erase files
Recovery is a collection of tools. Opening it is not a command to remove your data. Distinguish disk checks, system installation and disk erasure. Read the selected action carefully and assess your backup before proceeding.
Prepare before working
Connect reliable power and arrange stable networking if downloads are needed. Have your normal sign-in information available; a security confirmation is not necessarily a fault. Do not give passwords to strangers offering an urgent recovery fix.
When assistance is appropriate
An invisible disk, repeated errors or unexpected shutdowns may indicate more than a software issue. Record the message and preceding events. Agree whether files, applications and current settings need preservation before repair starts.
