Is the whole system slow?
If only one website struggles, the connection or site may be responsible. If local documents also open slowly, assess the system more broadly. Record when it began, recent updates and whether slowness starts immediately after boot. A specific task, such as opening a project, is more useful than “it used to be faster”.
Activity Monitor and memory pressure
Activity Monitor shows which applications use CPU and memory. A large used-RAM figure alone does not establish a shortage: memory pressure and the workload matter. Compare the usual task with fewer applications open. Do not randomly terminate unfamiliar system processes, which may be doing necessary work.
Storage and background tasks
Check available space and large files. Updates, photo imports and synchronisation can leave work running in the background. Observe whether activity falls after completion. Delete files only when their purpose is understood and a copy exists. Random cleanup utilities are not required for diagnosis and can add background processes themselves.
Cooling and hardware limits
Use a firm surface and keep any vents clear. Not every MacBook has a fan, so silence alone is not a fault. Slowness appearing only after sustained load warrants assessment of thermal behaviour. RAM and internal SSD upgrades are not simple module swaps on many models; identify the exact design first.
When should system recovery be considered?
Reinstalling macOS does not add physical memory or repair failed hardware. Discuss files, accounts, licences and backups first. Diagnosis can separate software slowdown from storage or cooling issues. Bring a reproducible task and explain whether it is equally slow on battery and suitable external power.
Quick checks
| Situation | What to check | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Only one application is slow | Compare another local task | The application or project may be responsible. |
| After a large import | Wait for background processing | Temporary activity is not necessarily failure. |
| Slow only after warming up | Check the work surface and load | Thermal behaviour needs assessment. |
