Can a 60 Hz laptop screen be upgraded to 144 Hz?

A higher refresh rate needs a compatible panel, cable and laptop implementation, not just a matching screen size.

Matching size is not enough

Two panels of the same diagonal can use different signals and connectors. Identify the exact laptop model and original panel code. Even one laptop series may ship with different display cables and configurations.

The cable may differ

A higher-refresh panel may need another cable or more signal bandwidth. Pin count alone does not prove compatibility. An unsuitable panel may fail to work or cause damage, so random trial-and-error installation is unwise.

Will games become faster?

A higher-refresh display does not automatically increase the frame rate a game produces. CPU, GPU and settings still limit performance. Assess brightness, colour and response time too: the refresh-rate number is not the only quality measure.

Making the decision

Check factory display options for the exact model and part availability first. Agree the complete cost, including a different cable if needed. If a safe upgrade is unsupported, a suitable external monitor may be a more practical option.

Frequently asked questions

Will any 40-pin panel fit?

No. Pin assignments, signal requirements and the exact panel model must be checked.

Will the new refresh rate activate automatically?

Not necessarily. Supported modes and system display settings need checking.
