Different materials fill different gaps
Thermal paste fills small surface irregularities between a chip and a closely fitted heatsink. Thermal pads bridge larger gaps specified by the cooling assembly design. They are not interchangeable alternatives. Selection depends on the board and heatsink arrangement, rather than simply choosing the highest advertised conductivity on a package.
Pad thickness affects contact
A pad that is too thin may fail to contact the heatsink. One that is too thick can lift the assembly away from the processor. Compressibility also matters, so an approximate ruler measurement is insufficient. Different locations in one laptop may need different materials. Do not stack pads or substitute paste without a design-specific reason.
What phase change material means
This type of thermal interface changes properties at its intended operating temperature. It can replace conventional paste in suitable applications, but is not a universal solution for every laptop. It is also different from a thick gap pad or liquid metal. Selection must account for mounting conditions and the material manufacturer’s instructions.
New paste cannot fix every cooling fault
A failing fan, blocked heatsink fins or ineffective heat pipe will not be repaired by new paste. The whole cooling path needs assessment. An ineffective heatsink may require replacement at a separately agreed cost. DIY liquid metal use is not advised: an electrically conductive material requires appropriate construction and careful precautions against unwanted contact.
Testing after reassembly
A useful check compares stability, fan behaviour and temperatures under similar loads. Performance and cooling response matter alongside the highest recorded temperature. Tell the service centre whether the heatsink was previously removed and what materials were used. A fixed temperature reduction cannot reasonably be promised for every device before inspection.
