Separate the licence from the installation
Having Windows installed does not establish the licence’s origin or transfer rights. A replacement motherboard can change how the device is recognised. The repair price does not automatically include a new licence.
Gather the relevant information
Record the Windows edition and activation error. Keep legitimate purchase records and known licence details. Do not expose product keys in public photographs or messages. There is no need to send the service centre your account password.
Choose the appropriate recovery route
Options depend on the licence and any earlier account association. Manufacturer, retail and organisation-managed licences differ. For a work computer, contact the administrator rather than changing activation settings at random.
Avoid unofficial activators
An unofficial activator is not licence recovery and can compromise system security. A different edition or new licence must be discussed separately. Before motherboard work, recording the working system’s activation status can make follow-up simpler.
