How to prepare a computer for sale

Verify your backup first

Save documents, photographs and other files you need to separate storage. Open important files on another device to check the copy. A synchronised folder is not always an independent backup: deletion may propagate to other devices. Do not leave the only copy of an important file on the computer you intend to sell.

Copying files does not erase the old drive

Choose a removal method appropriate to the computer and operating system. Putting files in the recycle bin is not a complete preparation for a new owner. If the device does not start or you are unsure about the procedure, discuss data handling before attempting a reset or formatting a drive.

Prepare accounts and device locks

Unlink personal accounts using the process for your system. Mac preparation varies by hardware and macOS version, so follow the relevant Apple instructions. For a computer managed by an employer, arrange release with the organisation. Do not include passwords or recovery keys in a valuation enquiry.

Describe the device accurately

Record its exact model, processor, RAM, storage, battery condition and known faults. Photograph the screen, casing and damage without exposing personal information. Mention a missing charger or previous repairs. Accurate details make an initial assessment more useful and help avoid misunderstandings at inspection.

Agree the handover

Check that your files are safe, accounts are prepared and accessories are gathered. Do not dismantle the computer just for a valuation.
