Check whether encryption is enabled
A sign-in password is not the same as full-disk encryption. Identify the protection method and where recovery information is stored. Do not assume the key is in an account until you verify it.
Hardware changes may require recovery
Motherboard, boot or security-setting changes can affect automatic unlocking. Prepare the key before failure where possible. A sole copy inside the same locked computer will not help after access is lost.
Share only necessary access
Do not post a recovery key publicly or include it in listing photographs. Discuss whether the technician needs a login or can perform hardware-only checks. Company devices may require administrator involvement.
Encryption is not a backup
It protects access, not against drive failure. Keep a verified backup before repair where possible. A lost recovery key is not an ordinary software fault that can always be fixed by changing settings.
