Protect documents and photos with backups, recovery checks and a plan for dealing with device loss or drive failure.
Follow the 3-2-1 rule
Keep three copies on two types of storage, with one copy in another location.
Automate backups
A scheduled backup is more reliable than occasional manual copying.
Test recovery
Check periodically that your backup opens and files can actually be restored.
Sync and backup are different
A sync service can propagate accidental deletion to other devices. Check whether previous versions can be restored and how long they are retained. At least one copy should be independent of the computer you use daily. Test it by restoring several files to a different folder and checking that they open correctly.
Practical checklist
- Identify folders containing irreplaceable files.
- Set an automatic backup schedule.
- Periodically test recovery and check free space.
