No sound after connecting an HDMI or DisplayPort monitor

A monitor can show a perfect picture while the expected sound is missing. Start by deciding where audio should come from: the monitor, laptop, headphones or separate speakers. That choice gives the troubleshooting a direction and avoids unnecessary driver changes.

Check whether the monitor actually has speakers

A monitor listed as a Windows audio device does not establish that it contains speakers. Check the specification for its exact model. Some displays require external speakers or headphones to reproduce audio. Replacing an HDMI cable will not add speakers to a display without them. Also distinguish an audio input from a headphone or audio output when checking the available sockets.

Choose the intended audio destination

Open Windows Settings → System → Sound and inspect the selected output device. Choose the laptop speakers if that is where you want sound, or the relevant display for monitor audio. Check both system and application volume. Use a familiar audio recording as a comparison; conferencing software may have its own device selection and should not be your only test.

Review the monitor controls and connection chain

Check volume and mute in the monitor menu if the model provides those settings. Write down the complete connection: computer, dock or adapter, cable and display. Where possible, compare a direct HDMI or DisplayPort connection. Change one item at a time and record which port you used so that a successful test identifies something meaningful about the original setup.

If the output device is missing altogether

Confirm that the monitor is on, reconnect the external cable and restart the computer. If the output remains absent, record the equipment models and Windows messages. Choose drivers using the manufacturer’s documentation. Installing several unrelated audio packages makes comparison harder; keep a note of the original configuration and changes instead of repeatedly replacing software without a clear test.

When to arrange further diagnosis

Further checks make sense if a known-working cable and correct output selection do not resolve the issue. Do not keep wiggling a socket that only works under pressure. Tell the technician whether headphones work, whether the monitor produces sound with another computer, and when audio disappears. Those comparisons help distinguish a configuration enquiry from a connection or hardware examination.

Frequently asked questions

Should sound work whenever the picture works?

Not necessarily. The correct audio destination and a playback device are still required. A working picture does not verify the entire audio path or application settings.

Can sound stay on the laptop?

Yes. Select the laptop speakers as the Windows output, then check whether your application has a separate audio-device choice that also needs updating.

Do I need to buy speakers immediately?

Check the monitor specification and available outputs first. If it lacks speakers, existing laptop audio, compatible headphones or separate speakers may meet your needs.
