Choose the correct output
Connecting an HDMI display or Bluetooth headphones can redirect sound. Select the laptop speakers or your headphones in Windows sound settings. Check volume and mute controls, then play a local audio file to separate a computer issue from a website problem.
Check individual applications
If other apps play sound, check the affected app's volume and output selection. A browser tab may be muted independently. Meeting apps often have separate audio settings. Restart the app before considering system changes: an isolated app problem does not establish a Windows fault.
Test headphones and drivers
Try known-working headphones and gently check the plug is fully seated. Reconnect Bluetooth devices. If the issue followed an update, use Windows troubleshooting and drivers from the computer manufacturer. Avoid unfamiliar automatic driver tools that may install unsuitable packages.
When to seek diagnosis
Crackling, sound that changes when the plug moves or one silent speaker can suggest a hardware issue, but none proves it alone. A service check compares outputs, drivers and connectors before recommending repair. Note when the issue started and whether headphones work.
