Distinguish this from no image at all
A visible pointer means part of the display path is working at that moment. Note whether the black screen appears before or after entering the password. This differs from a computer that never displays its manufacturer’s logo.
Check connected displays
After considering work in progress, disconnect an unnecessary dock or second monitor; Windows may be using another output. Record whether Ctrl+Alt+Delete opens the security screen. This helps distinguish an active session from a complete freeze.
Identify recent changes
A problem following a graphics-driver update differs from one preceded by storage errors. Comparing another existing account may reveal a user-profile issue. Do not create replacement accounts or delete old ones merely to hide the symptom.
Plan preservation before recovery
Discuss documents, applications and encryption before recovery work. Explain whether the problem occurs every time and whether an external display works. A black background alone is not a reason to immediately replace the screen panel or graphics hardware.
